With playoffs and end of season in 3 other games, I just put this off. I'll catch up. But here is last week's roundup Top Five Black Chariot (3) 9-2-4 AC Boston (1) 7-6-2 Cheeseheads FC (9) 6-7-2 Gilman (4) 7-4-4 AOG (2) 7-4-4 Black Chariot rides into the top spot with a 3 win week. ACB drops to second with 2 draws. Cheeseheads make the big move with a 3 win week. Gilman treads water. AOG stumbles at 1-1-1 BC riding high Oddly enough, it could have been better for Black Chariot. Even though they won all three games, I wrote "BC wasteful" twice in my notes, Against bothe Texas and Maine, they piled up the shots, but weren't putting them on goal. But with 2-0 and 2-1 wins, I'm sure they don't care. Even the game against Madison, which was much closer, had an air of disappointment. A 1-0 win rather flatters Madison as they only forced Stanley to make 2 saves and both were late in the game. BC will be hard to shut down. Out of 5 goals scored this week, there were 5 different goalscorers. Balance is good. Fathers Day for AC Boston Boston's week was kind of like Fathers Day. They got two ties. Their first game against Bobcats was an easy win. After both teams spent the first half take shots high, wide and over the bar, The Hillsiders pulled away with goals from Stockton and Tew. I figured the game against Madison would be a good one. I was wrong. Madison scored in the 6th minute on their only SOG for the game. Stockton equalized late in the half. Not much happened after that. Gonlez played well in goal, but the draw flattered the Mavs. The game against Texas was a similar story. Each side scored 4 minutes apart in the first half. Boston piled on the pressure, but couldn't solve Nixon Marks in goal. It was a week that Boston could have won all three games, but were frustrated twice. Cheeseheads make their move Week to week, one thing has stood out. Cheeseheads dominate the match rating list. With the three top rated players in the ML plus 3 more in the top 25, you know they are playing good ball. But somehow the results haven't been there. This week the results were there. They dispatched Maine in a game that was closer than it should have been. Omar "The Magician" El Hammouchi conjured up another win by scoring the only goal of the match. Sack and El Hammouchi both scored in a 2-0 win over SBS. The biggest news out of that game was the 6 game injury to high priced GK Viktor Bidstrup. He's probably been a bit of a disappointment to Coach John Smith, but he was finally rounding into form. I'll spotlight the third game later Gilman tread water Actually, it wasn't a bad week for the Owls. They were short on a number of fronts after injury and cards hit them hard in week 4. Playing AOG wasn't really a good deal for Gilman and they were thoroughly dominated. Gilman had no shots in the first half. Period. They mustered only 2 hots (1 on goal) in the whole game. It was a 1-0 loss, but it could have been a whole lot worse. After that, they had tidy wins against Arctica and SBS. Broster had 3 goals on the week. The plucky Owls continue to hang in there. Grievances erred AOG had a weird week. They thoroughly dominated Gilman. But after scoring an early goal through Deependu Thundyil, they put it in cruise control and came out with a 1-0 win. Their offense was still sleepwalking when they played Bobcats in the snoozer of the week. Having trouble sleeping? Search this game out. The two teams accounted for three shots on goal ina 0-0 draw. *Y-A-W-N* On the other hand... Game of the week It's always special when Cheeseheads and AOG get together. 2 giants in their sport that put the big in big match. The Evil Sports Programming network was on hand with Rob Rock and Tommy Mason doing the commentary. The Goodweek blimp floated overhead providing the aerial shots. Rapper 25 cent was in the stands and local legend Devnet Reader was seen taking in the game. Reader wanted everyone to know he's finished with his coaching certs and is actively looking for a job. On the field, last year's starter Jaimie Young was back in the nets due to Bidstrup's injury. Both keepers were in the game early as Stefan "Great Dane" Olsen created a brilliant chance for Rory Sack. GK Darrel Mapp was there to make the sace though. Tyler Priestley returned the favor a couple of minutes later creating a chance for Robert Place. But Young was on his toes and in the game. A series of yellow card offenses committed by AOG seemed to put Cheeseheads off their stride. Lalkamal Din Wadoo set up Bilh Chi Cuong for the first goal of the game. A great cross by Din Wadoo was the crucial play. Priestly decided the way to end the half was to butcher Erling "E T" Thygesen, something he'd regret later. The Cheese Palace crowd was a little uneasy at the half as their team hadn't played well. But Coach Smith must have lit into his team because they probably produced their best half of the season. Art "Woolly Mammoth" Bellamy signaled the intent of Cheesheads on the first play of the half. When the big man makes a run like this, you know something is up. Thygesen sent him through and his shot went into the side netting, but it fired up the crowd and inspired the team. Daniel Booth almost scored on a Bellamy corner, but Lynn Lawson made a cynical challenge and cleared man and ball. In the 57th minute, a Bellamy corner produced a goal as Thygesen rose over Jacob Benn for the goal. ET took time out to show his Adidas tattoo to Priestly. El Hammouchi had two chances in the 59th and 64th minutes. He squandered the first, but converted Sack's cross to a 2-1 lead. By this time the ground was rumbling and Josh "The Savage" Southern got a huge cheer as he butchered poor Jacob Benn for a yellow card. In the 75th minute, Thygesen set up El Hammouchi for the third goal. The goal and 2 assists was enough to earn Thygesen MoM honors. Priestly scored a consolation goal in the 85th minute, but by then the damage was done. Bellamy closed out the game with a crashing header after another long run up the field. A sure sign he wasn't going to allow his team to lose this one. And for 45 minutes, Cheeseheads showed why everyone keeps a wary eye on them. Best of the rest Not gonna belabor this since it's a week out of date. Cape May had a good week with 2 wins and a draw to move to 6th. Their game with Texas was pretty entertaining. Carolina moved to 7 with 2 wins and a loss. But the difference between 6 and 15 is only 4 points. It's very competitive in the middle. |
