This is the third round of matches in the Liberty League. The biggest headline to come out of this round is the injury to Badgers and US NT GK Larry "Clean Sheets" Lesley. Lesley suffered an injury early in the LL game which will leave him sidelined for at least 7 games. But because Billy Badger had his team banned this week as he leaves for military school, It puts some doubt on his return. The assistant manager can be a bit quirky and I've seen plenty of star players sidelined by injury who don't regain their starting spot. 18 year old deputy Harvey Jarvis is a fine looking prospect, but can he fill Lesley's boots? The other devastating injury is to F.C. Universitatea Craiova. ML Esteban "Giggs" Álvarez also suffered a 7 game injury in LL play. While maybe not as bad as that to Lesley, it comes on the heels of an injury to their starting GK Marek Trejbal. Although he is set to return, will this hamper their efforts this season? Liberty League 6 teams from North America are competing in the Liberty League Badgers FC Badgers FC [USA] 2-1 [Costa Rica] FC Cartago Badgers survive nightmare injuries. Injuries to GK Larry Lesley and Argentine MC Alejandro Dario Romagnoli mar the Badgers victory. Veteran Danish midfielder Mikkel Amstrup scored from the penalty spot and assisted on the game winning goal to guide the Badgers to a win. A stifling defense limited Cartago to only 2 shots on goal, shielding their young backup goalkeeper. The win puts them in a tie with Os Tornados for second in Pool 4 at 1-2-0. The Badgers host the next match with Os Tornados. Cheeseheads FC Cheeseheads FC [USA] 7-0 [Paraguay] San Francisco Cheeseheads have had some frustrating results this year and probably deserve a better record in the ML than they have. They also suffered a disappointing draw in the first round of this tournament. But they seemed to take out all of their frustrations on the hapless Paraguayans. The domination was total. 62-38 possession. 22-16 to 6-3 on shots. The snowy pitch obviously bothered the Albiazul. All of the nickname stars got into the act. The Hammer. ET. The Magician. But none greater than the Great Dane who produced a goal and 2 assists. This puts Cheeseheads frmly in front of Pool 6 with a 2-1-0 record. They face Salvadoran side Plagio Di Plagio F.C in the next round. Black Chariot Los Temibles de Gibr [Belize] 1-4 [USA] Black Chariot Black Chariot shrugged off an early goal to come back and score a decisive 4-1 road win. Goals by Giggs, Williams, Martinez and al-Temyat powered BC to the win. The BC defense limited Stonecutter to 2 shots on goal; both in the first half. The win places BC in second with a 2-0-1 record. They look to avenge the opening round loss when they travel to Brazil to face first place Sport Recife. Real Westbank Real Westbank [Canada] 0-2 [Panama] Los Elegidos Los Blancos had to be disappointed as Justo Figueroa netted goals 2 minutes apart and the Westbank offense couldn't solve Jorge García's goalkeeping. Despite an edge in possession and the yeoman work of Man of the Match Adam Brainard, Westbank dropped its first points in this year's tourney. They still sit in first with a 2-0-1 record in Pool 9. Their next match is away to Paraguayan side Parpok FC Pink Fuzzie Bunnies Pink Fuzzie Bunnies [Canada] 0-2 [Peru] Deportivo Mariajuana PFB were dominated at the Burrow as goals by Alameda and "EL" Bueno were enough to give the Peruvian side the win. Truth be told, PFB only mustered 4 shots on goal and it was only because of several world class saves by Carl Nemethy that they were even in the game. At 1-0-2 in Poll 15, they'll have to hope for another easy win a EZ FC to keep their LL hopes alive. F.C. Universitatea Craiova F.C. Universitatea C [Canada] 2-0 [Bolivia] CLUB BOLIVAR Another brutal injury in LL play as Costa Rican NT midfielder Esteban "Giggs" Álvarez went down to a 7 game injury after he had assisted on Stiinta's 1st goal. Keeper Marco Constantine could have taken the night off as Bolivar only mustered 1 shot on goal. Contrast that to the 22 shot/14 on goal barrage faced by MoM Mateo Balladares. It was only his heroic intervention that prevented a real blowout. The next match for Stiinta is away to Just One in Costa Rica. They currently lead Pool 17 witha 2-1-0 record. |
