One of the reasons I don't bet is because I'm lousy at it. Proof of this is that my pick to win the league is sitting in the relegation playoff zone. But there's no reason to expect that he'll finish there. And I don't put a whole lot of stock in where teams are after the first week. But a weekly roundup has to start somewhere.
The big winner this week was FC Cape May. The only team in the ML to open up with 3 straight wins, the skunks are first past the post. They did it in impressive fashion with wins over defending champ Black Chariot and a 3-0 stunner over AOG.
4 teams slot in just behind with 2 wins and a loss. Black Chariot and AOG figure to contend all year. Promoted team FC Bobcats benefited from playing two of the weaker teams in the league. A team that I overlooked in the preview was Gilman FC who opened with wins against RKS Maine and Carolina.
8 teams come in with 1-1-1 records. I think this speaks to the balance in the league. There are clearly a few teams that are the class of the bunch, but there are few easy wins in this league. The only team with no points in 3 games is FC Nashville, a notorious slow starter. Badgers FC's Abd Elzaher Fathy will take goalscorer of the week with 4 goals from three games. Consistant, original and Danish teammate Mikkel Amstrup scored 3 in 3 games (have you ever seen a player with so many awards??), as did Cape May's Johnny Peckover.
For the upcoming week, here are my highlight games per round:
Round 4:
Airing of Grievances vs Badgers FC FC Cape May vs Madison Mavericks
Round 5:
AC Boston vs FC Cape May Gilman FC vs Black Chariot
Round 6:
Badgers FC vs AC Boston FC Cape May vs Gilman FC
Also, Liberty League games kick off this week. If you're an insomniac or work nights, games start at 1:00 and 2:00 TM time. I've posted a thread in the NA forum with games and links for both the US and Canadian teams.
