Well this is the way I believe it may work from when I studied it when I started. I honestly do not bother now as like you guys say (I agree also), it simply doesnt work the way it should. Each formation has a range from 1 to 9. 1 being ultra defensive and 9 being all out attacking. Each mentality setting has +/- 0.5 MEN: EXTREMELY DEF -2.5 VERY DEF -2.0 DEF -1.5 SOMEWHAT DEF -1.0 SLIGHTLY DEF -0.5 NORMAL 0 SLIGHTLY ATT +0.5 SOMEWHAT ATT +1.0 ATT +1.5 VERY ATT +2.0 EXTREMELY ATT +2.5 For example, if you play a 4-4-2 formation (MEN 5) with EXT DEF (-2.5) you adjust your tactic mentality to 2.5 and so would be playing defensively. If you play ALL OUT ATT (+2.5) you adjust your mentality to an attacking style. If you play an attacking formation 3-5-2 (Men 8) and you play EX DEF (-2.5) you would still be playing at a mentality above the mid range (5). The same would work for a defensive formation i.e. 5-4-1 (MEN 1) and you try to adjust for ALL OUT ATT mentality (+2.5) you are still below the mid range (5) and therefore still playing defensively. The 4-3-3 DEF formation is actually a higher attacking mentality (6) than the mid range and is not really a defensive formation as such. If you then play an attacking mentality (+1.5) you are adjusting the overall mentality to 7.5 which is a very high attacking MEN. This may result in less possession but also boosting your attack but weakening your defence. Like I say, this is how it / should work, but does it is the vital question ? |

Different attacking styles require different skills from your players and different skills to defend against them. This is one area of the manual that is relatively comprehensive. |

The role of the captain is one of those beautifully vague elements that TM is overladen with. |
