1-2 down to Hungary is the first loss of your tenure, but Hungary are a top side, what positives do you take out of the match? I was pleased with the number of chances we created and with the performance of Mc Cartan at DMC, that had been a selection headache but with help on the federation I was able to make the right choice as it turned out. I thought Alan Whelan had a good game too and was perhaps unlucky not to score. McDermott over O Raighne upfront, what was the rationale for that decision? Quite easy call to make, O Raighne has played 5 games for the NT side and drawn a blank, Mc Dermott has played four times and has 1 goal and an assist, obviously O Raighne is a great player but for whatever reason it is not happening for him at International level yet. Wayne Tully disappeared off the NT radar for a while, what do you see in him? He has great passing. long shots and everything you need in an OMC, he is also is a great set piece taker. If anyone thinks there is a better OMC in Ireland not in the current squad I am all ears. With the benefit of hindsight is there anything about the Hungarian selection you'd change? Yes I would have stuck with Greene as GK, The 'Cat' was at fault for our second goal. There is not much else I would have changed, our team played well enough but their Goalkeeper made a few decent saves. Hopefully in the next match we can get back on the winning track. Obviously if I had known what formation the Hungarian manager was going to use I might have changed things around a bit but at NT level the formations change from game to game so you try to send out the best team you have in a formation that plays to their strengths and hope that the players do what is expected of them. cheers! |
