On 27th june 2009,Ireland travelled to the coliseum in the welsh mountains, only a week after the last game of the qualifyers, which saw both teams eliminated. Ireland did start qualification well but lady luck changed wind on ireland towards the end,a bug robbed ireland of a result against the Czechs and then Wales forgetting to field their strongest team, although they had an outside chance of qualifying, ended any hope of ireland progressing. What followed was to be a bloodbath between both countries,Ireland took it as disrespect on Wales's part and in return Wales did not really carewhat the irish thought.A no-show from Wales's manager TTT at a press conference explaining their actionsfor the final game infuriated Irish manager AT and the whole saga boiled over into a war of words.
AT and a few other irish burst into the Wales headquarters demanding an explanation, but in return, all they got was petty sly remarks ,Wales just didnt seem to take responsibility for their forgetfullness. So i went and got a quick interview from both managers befor the game.
When i asked AT "What are your personal feelings towardsthe whole situation regarding your wales counterpart?" His reply was simple "My own personal feelings on the matter are that Two-Tors was very belligerent and rude about the whole thing". I then proceeded to find TTT,and travelled to wales, only to find TTT playing a william hill sponsored poker tournament in the back of a welsh pub, upon a smoke break, when asked "how do you feel about the whole saga?" he replied "After a difficult week I feel I've been treated quite unfairly. I would now like the end of the affair and certainly don't want my dirty laundry out in the open even further. I would normally love to answer your questions, but I think It's best I let the dust settle on this one. At this point, I still feel quite strongly about it all and any answers I give probably won't go down well" "How will you be approaching this friendly?" his reply " teabag says he dosn't care about it but I'd surprised if that's true. I'd like to give my community a win because they want it and it would go some way towards making amends for them. That being said, I'm still blooding a few youngsters."
So kick off at the coliseum was sure to be more than a friendlyand after only 9 minutes of play, J.Rochfort jumped to the ground and refused to play on in protest till Ireland got an apology, But AT was having none of it and he was subsituted. Not long after seen wales take the lead, smashing in a wonder strike from 25yards,which prooved to be enough to settle this otherwise even game, both sides had a few chances, but none were taken. So wales take bragging rights, till the next game at least.
Rochfort was only warned of his future conduct in an irish shirt after apologising to the manager, team and the irsh faithfull. |
