Matchday 15, 3 May 2009: On a wet and miserable Sunday evening throughout Ireland division 5.20 threw up one of the most amazing matchdays in lower league history!
Match of the day was a clash between a mid-table club and the divisional flyers: Haydens Army v. Kandor Town. Michael Haydens Dublin city outfit went into the game with huge confidence after beating wengers alter boys 2-1 at home and putting up a cricket score against the Munster B's, with a 0-10 away win! Haydens team, who were in the relegation zone at the early stages, needed every point on the go.
Kandor Town on the other hand were looking to pull away from the league chasers of Limerick F.C, David Reillz's Claremorris and Jose's man city blues With their seven game unbeaten run few would bet against them!.
Of the 7,999 gathered at The Theatre Of Dreams on an overcast day many looked on in hope that Michael Haydens Army would pull off a shock result (like a scoreless draw). A shock they would get, as Haydens army disarmed the kandor town strikeforce with some great defensive play. They attacked, attacked, attacked and many home fans began to wonder if they could perhaps get all 3 points?
And on the 67th minute the stadium erupted - man of the match Harford put in an excellent through ball to Thomas Byrne who made no mistake and from 25 metres beat the Kandor town goalkeeper. For the final 23 minutes Kandor Town huffed and puffed but just could not blow this house down. What a result for Michael Haydens Army as they continue their winning streak with an end to Kandor Town's unbeaten run.
But Kandor Town's misery became even worse as Limerick F.C beat the struggling Barnaderg 2-0 to take top spot, with goals coming from man of the match J.Nolan.
Meanwhile Claremorris could only muster a 0-0 draw with strugglers Cushlawn Celtic. Man city blues scored a late goal for a draw with Internet Hotshots. Steven McDonald's weak finish was fisted into the net by Internet Hotshots goalkeeper McKinley to cancel out M.Higgins's goal. But all in all Internet Hotshots can be happy with the result as they prevented man city blues from taking top spot on a wonderful weekend of football.
Another result which should be noted is the 10-1 winning margin for Galway Rovers over Munster B's as the galwegians showed their firing power, and compounded the youthful munster squads woes! So after a weekend of surprises, Limerick F.C overtook Kandor Town for top spot!
This week we talked to Claremorris manager David Reillz who gave us his thoughts on the game and what he would like his team to achieve this season: "Well since I joined on the 18th April I have become quite addicted to TM. When I first joined my team was in 16th place."
David Reillz on his goals: "My goal for the season is promotion to divison 4 and to take it from there. I'm not really interested in the cup as in reality I am not going to go far." On his clubs immediate future: "Hopefully during the season I can get a few cheapish players and maybe a few promising youngsters. If you ask me I think the teams to watch are limerick f.c, galway rvrs and manchester city blues. The bottom of the table is impossible to call, I think it'll come down to who's most active. But obviously Munster United 'b' will find it tough."
And best of luck to David on achieving his goals this season.
