Season 17 Players and Team of the Season
Another season gone and the quality of play, and players, in Division 2 keeps improving. Cavan Celtic's 83 points may not quite be a record (Parry San Yer Man got 85 in season 11), nor their 83 goals for (85, again, this time Donegal Gunners in season 8), but the combination is a new high point for the Division and a solid warning shot to the League of Ireland.
Individually there have been some wonderful performances. The 30 goals by José Ramón Contreras helped Cavan Celtic to blitz 2.2, while Grigorios Mpezentakos heroics in goals were not enough to prevent Super Nashwan from relegation. but it is the Eire Everton defensive pair of Steve McEvoy and Danny McGlinchey which stand out the most this season. Despite their outstanding contribution, Eire Everton failed to rebound straight back up to the LOI. But surely continued displays of this magnitude should make them one of the favourites for next season.
Cavan Celtics young Italian, Serafino "De Lemon" De Novellis, was the youngster that impressed most this season. The winger was involved in twenty of their goals and will no doubt be terrorizing the LOI's best right backs next season.
Division Two Team of the Year, Season 17:
Formation: 4-4-2 (Defensive). Direct Style, Slightly Dfensive. Manager: Paul Martin, Cavan Celtic GK: Grigorios Mpezentakos, Super Nashwan DR: Danny McGlinchey, Eire Everton . (Captain) DC: Steve McEvoy, Eire Everton. DC: Gilson Leite, FC Cork DL: Eoin Campell, Cavan Celtic DMC: Scott McShane, Athlone Town MC: Jamie Conway, Cavan Celtic ML: Serafino "De Lemon" De Novellis, Cavan Celtic FC: José Ramón Contreras, Cavan Celtic FC: Adrian Rada, Serenity City Subs: Goalie: Nicolas Warren, Serenity City Defender: Oisin Tynan, Clonsilla United Midfield: Stephen Moule, Eire Everton Wings: Arseniy "C. Ronaldo" Pohrebnyak, Shamrock Hoops Forward: Karim Kareem, Leeverpool FC
Notes: The main absentee is Jamie Kennedy (Serenity City) - it's hard to make a team-of-the-season and omit the highest rated player (McGlinchey). As such DR was occupied and, as standard, the defensive sub went to a versatile DCL. Teran got the nod over Pohrebnyak due to assists.
