Na Fianna set about showing that their league-placing was entirely misleading as they racked up nine goals and nine points to go from the relegation zone to eighth spot. While some of their defensive efforts left a little to be desired, Fionn’s Bunch surely have genuine reason to hope that their heroes can keep pushing on.
At the top of the table, Askeaton kept ahead of Elland Rovers but Lisburn City ensured they didn’t have it their own way, briefly claiming the top spot with somewhat flattering 4-0 win over Pirate Ninja Dinosaurs United before being pushed back down to second after a draw with Athlone Town.
The Town had a mixed week, just about breaking even in clashes with two of their fellow promoted teams. A defeat to Eire Everton (who have been making quiet progress so far in the LOI) was offset by a victory against Cavan Celtic, who managed a creditable win against PND but missed out on the signature of Ledley Owens, the Na Fianna defender opting to go to Italy in the end.
Romero FC remain the top promoted team, although their defensive reputation took a battering, nine goals conceded including five at the hands of Park Rangers FC (who could only manage one more goal all week) means confidence must be fragile. Still, they are at the right end of the table, but caution could well be the keyword for the near future.
Celtic Bhoys have proven the most consistent team so far this season. Since grabbing fifth at the end of the opening week they have been there or in fourth with no exceptions so far. While their fans might find it frustrating that they haven’t been able to bridge the gap to the European spots so far, Gordon Strachan (apparently feeling more loyal in TM) must feel quite pleased with his side’s efforts so far. Although shipping seven goals in two games (four from Askeaton and three from Na Fianna) is something that will have to be addressed, and quickly.
Game of the Week – Athletico Teabag vs. Elland Rovers – Plenty of goal fests this week, so just to be odd, I’d recommend this one. High drama and higher tension throughout.
Player of the Week – Michael McNelis(Athletico Teabag) The youngster seems determined to take his chance in the first-team. He made a great start this week. |
