Or not if you are leading the League of Ireland. Athletico Teabag appeared to be suffering from nerves, or at least Liam Hunt was! The Teabag goalie proving to be the difference as Na Fianna ran out 3-1 winners in what was otherwise an evenly balanced tie.
Askeaton –faced with the chance to go into the last game with the outcome in their own hands- wavered in the face of an onslaught from a Serenity City still chasing Europe, the 4-3 scoreline flattering to deceive in the end. In spite of their two point lead, the goal difference situation means Teabag know they must win to be certain of the title in their final game against outgoing champions Le Sharks while for The Tribesmen it is all still to play for.
As if Askeaton needed further incentive, if they were to falter on the last day then they could yet miss out on Champions League soccer to Shamrock hoops, for whom a 2-1 away to Irish wolfhounds :) -coupled with Shout FC dropping points for a second matchday- was enough to guarantee European competition for next season. While their cup semi-final will presumably take priority now, surely the chance to snatch second will ensure a strong final day performance.
That game sees the Super hoops hosting newly relegated derry fc, who failed to secure the win against Shout FC that would have prolonged their chances of survival. Still, at least the Candystripes will be participating in Division 2 next season after the club was saved from folding dramatically by an outpouring of goodwill, encouragement and some mild sarcasm.
Celtic Bhoys victory over One nil to the arsenal not only kept alive their hopes of avoiding a relegation play-off but all but consigned Carnew Rovers to life in Division 2 next season after they lost out to Le Sharks at Galtymore. While a relegation play-off spot is still a mathematical possibility, it would require a five goal victory over the Smiley Faced Hounds to save them. A long shot, but this league has seen seven and eight goal wins this season…
While we’ve already covered Shamrock hoops securing of third place, it is important to note that the battle for fourth could prove equally important. Should the Super hoops triumph in the cup then that UETA Cup spot will be awarded to the fourth placed side in the league (apparently it’s a Scandinavian thing, go figure) and with five teams still in contention, the ranks of the Hoops could be swelled by some new supporters should they reach the cup final. Then again, Lisburn v. Shamrock hoops is still is possible final line-up so maybe that fanclub won’t be so big.
Or of course we could be focused intently on the title and play-off battles. I’m just trying to drum up interest because we’re so short of final day suspense! I’ll be there, will you? |
